Vancouver Whitecaps' future in the city remains unresolved as season winds down

The Vancouver Whitecaps enter the final weeks of the 2026 Major League Soccer season with their long-term home still undecided, nearly two years after their ownership group put the club up for sale. The team's lease at BC Place, the provincially owned stadium where it has played since 1983, expires at the end of this year, and no new agreement has been signed.

Owners Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett and Steve Nash announced in December 2024 that they were seeking a buyer for the club 4, saying the decision followed "careful consideration of the club's journey and reflection on what is required to ensure its continued growth and success" 4. The asking price was never made public.

Since then, the club has said its finances are constrained by its arrangement at BC Place, which is owned and operated by the provincial Crown corporation PavCo. In an April statement, the Whitecaps said "the club has faced well-documented structural challenges around stadium economics, venue access, and revenue limitations that have made it difficult to attract buyers committed to keeping the team in Vancouver," adding that "over the past 16 months, we have had serious conversations with more than 100 parties, and to date, no viable offer has emerged that would keep the club here" 2. The Los Angeles Times has reported the club has lost more than $300 million since joining MLS 15 years ago and was forecast to lose as much as $45 million in 2026 14.

Las Vegas bid confirmed, not yet decided

In late April, The Athletic reported that MLS had told other team owners it was exploring relocating the Whitecaps, with Las Vegas emerging as the leading candidate 1. Days later, a spokesperson for Grant Gustavson, son of billionaire Tamara Gustavson and grandson of Public Storage co-founder B. Wayne Hughes, confirmed to multiple outlets that his investment group had submitted a formal offer to MLS to buy the Whitecaps and relocate them to Las Vegas, with a privately financed stadium there 3. The offer would still need to be accepted by Whitecaps ownership and approved by the MLS board of governors 3.

MLS commissioner Don Garber has called the stadium situation at BC Place "critical" and "untenable," citing scheduling restrictions and an inability to add premium seating 56. He has expressed hope the Whitecaps could find a way to remain in Vancouver and said expansion to Las Vegas could also be a possibility, though no decisions had been made as of late April 6. As of the reporting to date, MLS has not announced a final decision on relocation, and the story that first broke the news did not include a timeline for a move 1.

A second, B.C.-based investor group also came forward in May, with provincial Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon telling reporters the group appeared "serious" and was "grounded in a plan to keep the team here," though he offered no further details and the group has not gone public 7.

Government response

Premier David Eby has said losing the Whitecaps to Las Vegas would be "a travesty" and that the province is "pulling out the stops" to keep the club in B.C. 8. The province has ruled out buying the team outright and has also ruled out transferring ownership of BC Place to the club, though it has offered financial concessions, including returning roughly $1.5 million a year in gameday revenue to the Whitecaps under a one-year deal reached in February 89.

Talks continued through the summer over giving the Whitecaps greater control of BC Place's day-to-day operations, including concessions, parking and advertising revenue, an arrangement similar to what Toronto FC has at BMO Field. In late August, a podcast report claimed a five-year deal had been finalized, but the Whitecaps and provincial sources disputed that, saying "no 'new or different agreement' had been reached," though discussions were continuing 10. In July, B.C. briefly signalled openness to selling BC Place to the Whitecaps outright before Kahlon said the province was "not interested" in a sale after the CFL's B.C. Lions also expressed interest in buying the venue 11.

Separately, the City of Vancouver and the Whitecaps signed a memorandum of understanding in December 2025 giving them until the end of 2026 to negotiate a possible purpose-built stadium and entertainment district at Hastings Park, on the site of the former Hastings Racecourse 1213. No lease or design has been finalized, and the exclusive negotiation window closes at the end of this year.

On the field, and in the stands

The uncertainty has unfolded against a backdrop of strong results. The Whitecaps reached the MLS Cup final and the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in 2025, then opened the 2026 season near the top of the Western Conference, drawing sellout crowds at BC Place, including 27,589 fans for their final home game before this summer's FIFA World Cup 3.

Vancouver hosted seven World Cup matches at BC Place in June and July, and fan groups have argued that the tournament strengthened the case for keeping the club in the city. The Vancouver Southsiders, the club's largest supporters' group, launched a "Save the Caps" campaign in April, gathering thousands of petition signatures and organizing marches to BC Place 1516. Southsiders board member Wyatt Tierney told Daily Hive the group believes "fan action works" and that mobilizing the community can help keep the team in Vancouver 17.

As of late September 2026, the Whitecaps remain for sale, without a confirmed stadium arrangement beyond this season, and without a finalized relocation deal. Both the Las Vegas bid and the prospect of a new Vancouver stadium remain live possibilities, and no party has said when a resolution is expected.
